This is one of the most extensive ethnographic accounts of the myths,
legends and folklore of the Hopi. This book, long out of print and only
available in a few University libraries, is probably one of the best
sources of Hopi traditions from the late 19th Century. H.R. Voth collected
these texts from a number of Hopi sources from different villages, often
supplying two or three versions of the same text, which adds to their
authenticity.
If you have read the classic Frank Waters
Book
of the Hopi, you may be somewhat surprised as you read this
collection, as the two accounts seem to differ substantially. There are
two possible explanations for this. Either Voth or Waters (or possibly
both) was fed disinformation by the Hopi, one of the most secretive tribes
as regards their spritual traditions. It should be noted that both works
have their strengths, and neither entirely contradicts each other.
